Recorded by an F/A-18 Super Hornet’s targeting pod during a training mission, the video shows a roughly oval object that appears to rotate or “gimbal” while continuing to travel across the frame, with pilot audio expressing confusion about the object’s behavior relative to strong high-altitude winds.
Assessment
Some independent analysts, including a widely discussed 2021 analysis by physicist Mick West, argued the apparent rotation is a camera and targeting-pod optical artifact produced as the pod’s gimbal mount rotates to keep the object centered, rather than motion of the object itself, which they suggest could be a distant aircraft or other conventional object. The Navy has confirmed the footage’s authenticity but has not offered its own explanation of the object’s identity or motion.
