Navy F/A-18 infrared targeting-pod footage, officially released by the Pentagon in 2020, shows a small object appearing to skim rapidly just above the ocean surface while pilots on the radio express astonishment at its apparent speed.
Assessment
Skeptical analyst Mick West has argued that the object was likely moving much slower than it appeared, and that the footage’s apparent high speed results from a parallax effect caused by the tracking pod’s own motion relative to a comparatively slow-moving, wind-blown object such as a balloon; other researchers dispute that this fully accounts for the pilots’ independent visual impressions during the encounter.
