The Defense Intelligence Agency administered both the AATIP (Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program) and AAWSAP (Advanced Aerospace Weapon System Applications Program) contracts, making it the military intelligence agency most directly responsible for the 2007-2012 era UAP research programs that later became public.
Current role
DIA continues to provide technical and analytic support to AARO, particularly regarding foreign adversary capabilities that could account for some UAP reports, an area within its core institutional mandate.
Assessment
DIA’s dual role — funding early research widely cited by proponents of a secret retrieval program, while also being the agency AARO’s 2024 report drew on to conclude no such program exists — has made it a recurring subject of both skeptical and believing narratives about the government’s internal state of knowledge.
