The Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was a Defense Intelligence Agency effort, championed by then-Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and run initially by Luis Elizondo, to study reports of advanced aerospace threats, including UAP, that might indicate foreign adversary capability.
Public revelation
AATIP remained classified and largely unknown to the public until a December 2017 New York Times investigation by Leslie Kean, Ralph Blumenthal, and Helene Cooper revealed its existence alongside the Navy ‘Gimbal’ and ‘FLIR1’ videos, reigniting mainstream interest in the subject after decades of official silence.
Assessment
The Pentagon has stated AATIP’s funding ended in 2012, though Elizondo has said he continued related work informally afterward until his 2017 resignation in protest of what he called excessive internal secrecy.
