Security personnel at Loring Air Force Base, Maine, and subsequently at several other Strategic Air Command bases reported unidentified lights and objects near weapons storage areas over a period of roughly two months, prompting alerts and, in some cases, scrambled interceptor aircraft.
Assessment
A 1975 Air Force internal review attributed some reports to bright stars, aircraft, and helicopter lights, but declassified message traffic shows commanders at the time treated a subset of reports as unexplained and potentially security-relevant. The wave overlaps in time and character with the earlier Minot AFB Incident and Malmstrom AFB Incident.
