The Brazilian Air Force has investigated several of Latin America’s most significant UFO cases, including the 1977 Colares ‘Operation Prato’ light-phenomena investigation and aspects of the 1996 Varginha Incident.
Operation Prato
Operation Prato was a formal, multi-month Air Force field investigation into reported nocturnal light attacks on residents of Colares Island, involving military personnel, physicians, and photographic documentation; part of the resulting report remains classified, which researchers cite as evidence the Brazilian military took the phenomena more seriously than most Western counterparts of the era.
Current posture
Brazil has periodically declassified historical UFO-related military files through its Access to Information Law, and the Air Force continues to receive and log civilian UAP reports, though without a permanently dedicated investigative office comparable to France’s GEIPAN.
