Luis Elizondo is a former U.S. Army counterintelligence officer and Department of Defense employee who became publicly known in December 2017 when the New York Times Pentagon UFO Story identified him as having run the Pentagon’s Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program.
Background and departure
Elizondo says he resigned from the Department of Defense in 2017 in protest of what he described as excessive secrecy and inadequate resourcing devoted to the UAP issue, subsequently joining Tom DeLonge’s To The Stars Academy as director of global security and intelligence before becoming an independent researcher and author.
Assessment
The Pentagon has confirmed Elizondo worked on UAP-related matters but has publicly disputed some characterizations of his formal role and level of authority within AATIP, a point of ongoing contention between Elizondo and Department of Defense public affairs officials, including Susan Gough. Elizondo has since testified to Congress and published a bestselling book advocating for further disclosure.
