Infrared video recorded by a U.S. Customs and Border Protection surveillance aircraft shows a small, fast-moving object flying low over the ocean before appearing to descend into the water without producing a visible splash, a detail widely emphasized by researchers who obtained and publicized the footage years later through Freedom of Information Act requests.
Assessment
The Department of Homeland Security has not offered a public conventional explanation for the footage. Some aviation analysts have suggested the object’s apparent behavior could be consistent with a bird or drone at a different distance and altitude than assumed, an interpretation disputed by the researchers who publicized the case; AARO has since included the case among files under review.
