The Soviet Academy of Sciences UFO Commission was a scientific working group established in the 1980s to formally review UFO reports within the USSR, a rare instance of state-sanctioned Soviet engagement with the subject, emerging partly amid the greater openness of the glasnost period.
Role
The commission’s most notable public involvement came in connection with the widely reported 1989 Voronezh Incident, which Soviet state media covered with commission-linked commentary, though the commission itself expressed skepticism about the more extravagant elements of the reporting.
Dissolution
The commission’s activity effectively ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, and no directly equivalent standing Russian government UFO body has existed since, though individual Russian researchers have continued independent case investigation.
