Soviet state news agency TASS reported that children playing in a city park witnessed a large, glowing craft land and a giant, three-eyed humanoid figure emerge, one of the first officially sanctioned Soviet UFO reports to receive open, non-dismissive state media coverage during the glasnost period.
Assessment
Western and later Russian researchers have generally concluded that Soviet media, eager to demonstrate new openness under glasnost, significantly amplified and dramatized initially more modest witness accounts; the involvement of the Soviet Academy of Sciences UFO Commission lent the story unusual official credibility at the time, though the commission itself later expressed skepticism about the more extravagant details.
