The UK Ministry of Defence maintained a small internal desk from the 1950s until 2009 responsible for logging and assessing public UFO reports for defense significance, staffed at various points by officials including Nick Pope.
Scope
The desk’s role was explicitly limited to assessing whether reports indicated any threat to UK airspace; it was not tasked with resolving the scientific nature of sightings, and its assessments of individual cases, including Rendlesham Forest incident, were generally that they held no defense significance regardless of their ultimate explanation.
Closure
The MoD closed the desk in 2009, citing the diversion of resources from more pressing defense priorities and stating that in over 50 years no UFO report had revealed evidence of a threat to the United Kingdom; a large body of the desk’s historical files (the DEFE 24 series) has since been released to the National Archives.
