Project Condign was a classified study commissioned by the UK Ministry of Defence to review UAP evidence, conducted between roughly 1996 and 2000 and publicly released, in redacted form, only after a 2006 freedom-of-information request.
Conclusions
The report’s central conclusion was that the large majority of UAP sightings likely resulted from natural, poorly understood atmospheric-plasma phenomena rather than either conventional aircraft misidentification or extraterrestrial technology, a distinctive hypothesis that has drawn both interest and skepticism from other researchers, since well-characterized atmospheric plasma of the kind described is not otherwise well documented in mainstream atmospheric physics.
Reception
The report explicitly rejected the extraterrestrial hypothesis and recommended no further dedicated MoD research, a conclusion that contributed to the eventual 2009 closure of the department’s UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) UFO desk.
