In early November 1963, a radio station in Rio de Janeiro reported that a “large metal sphere” with a dead occupant had crashed near Conde, Bahia. The story was picked up by the CIA’s Foreign Broadcast Information Service and ended up in the files of the White House National Aeronautics and Space Council.[1]
Investigation
On November 20, 1963, the U.S. Embassy in Rio relayed the findings of the scientific attaché at the U.S. Consulate in Salvador, Bahia: there was no contemporary local reporting, the accounts contradicted each other, and the incident was a fabrication that originated in Rio.[1]
Assessment
The case is a clear example of a crash story debunked at the time. Its official records only became public in PURSUE Release 05; see Bahia, Brazil crash claim (PURSUE).
