The Buga Sphere is a metallic, football-sized sphere that surfaced in viral videos in early-to-mid 2025, reportedly recovered near Buga, Colombia, and promoted by a small team, including a radiologist, as an object of possible non-human origin.[1]
The claims
Proponents, led by researcher Jose Luis Velazquez, argued the sphere showed “no evidence of welding” and contained unusually dense internal components inconsistent with a simple manufactured object. Footage circulated showing the sphere allegedly moving or responding to nearby people, and a team claimed to have used artificial intelligence software to interpret surface markings as a symbolic message about consciousness and the environment.[2]
Skepticism and likely explanation
The claims were met with rapid and substantial skepticism. Commentators identified footage from the promotional videos as containing branding consistent with a metal-detector company’s marketing campaign, raising the likelihood that the sphere and its “discovery” were part of a viral advertising stunt rather than a genuine anomalous find.[3] Julia Mossbridge, a researcher who reviewed early claims, was more measured, suggesting it resembled “a really cool art project” rather than either a hoax or genuine evidence, and noted the object’s foreign location made independent scientific testing by US-based research groups such as the Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies logistically impractical.[1] No peer-reviewed or independently verified material analysis of the sphere has been published, and its current whereabouts and chain of custody are not well documented. The case remains disputed and is widely regarded by UAP researchers as more likely a hoax or marketing stunt than a genuine physical anomaly.
