Forestry worker Robert Taylor reported encountering a large spherical object with a domed top in a forest clearing, after which he described two smaller mine-like objects approaching him, tearing his trousers, and causing him to lose consciousness; he was later found by his family with visible injuries and taken to a hospital.
Assessment
Lothian and Borders Police treated the case as a genuine assault and opened a criminal investigation — formally logged and, due to a filing quirk, technically never closed — but were unable to identify any perpetrator or conventional cause for Taylor’s injuries or torn clothing. Taylor maintained the account until his death and was widely regarded by investigators as a credible, non-attention-seeking witness.
