| Status | UnresolvedUnder scientific study |
Since the early 1980s, residents and later automated monitoring stations in the sparsely populated Hessdalen valley have recorded frequent unexplained lights, ranging from steady glowing orbs to rapidly moving flashes, at rates that have made the area a rare site of sustained scientific study of persistent aerial luminous phenomena.
Assessment
The ongoing Hessdalen Automatic Measurement Station, run by Italian and Norwegian researchers since the 1990s, has proposed hypotheses involving ionized dust, piezoelectric effects from local mineral deposits, and combustion of trace metals in the atmosphere, but no single mechanism has been confirmed to account for all observed light behaviors. The phenomenon is broadly accepted by mainstream scientists as real and physical, distinguishing it from most other UFO reports, while its precise cause remains under study.
