| Status | Unexplained |
Multiple United Airlines employees, including pilots and ramp personnel, reported a dark, saucer-shaped object hovering silently over a departure gate before it shot upward through the cloud layer, reportedly leaving a visible circular hole in the clouds; the FAA did not classify it as a safety incident and declined to investigate further.
Assessment
Proposed explanations have included a hole-punch cloud (a naturally occurring, though visually striking, cloud formation) coincidentally observed near an ordinary weather phenomenon, though this does not account for witness descriptions of a solid, hovering object prior to the cloud-punching ascent; the case, obtained via a FOIA request by a journalist rather than voluntary disclosure, remains formally unexplained.
