United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM) was created after the September 11 attacks to defend the U.S. homeland. Its commander also leads the binational NORAD. It is headquartered at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs.[1]
Role in UAP reporting
In February 2023 NORTHCOM and NORAD directed the shootdown of the Chinese surveillance balloon and three smaller unidentified objects over Alaska, Yukon and Lake Huron (see February 2023 shootdowns); infrared video from the Lake Huron intercept was released in PURSUE Release 02. NORTHCOM has also submitted domestic UAP reports, including a 2020 Atlantic range-fouler case and a 2024 Gulf of Oman video, to AARO.[2]
