The Office of the Director of National Intelligence was assigned a statutory role in 2021 to compile and publish periodic consolidated reports on UAP across the intelligence community and the military, drawing on case data supplied by AARO and other component agencies.
Key reports
ODNI’s landmark 2021 ODNI Preliminary Assessment was the first public government accounting of the modern scale of unexplained military UAP reports, reviewing 144 cases. The office has issued further periodic updates since, and in August 2026 issued preliminary guidance directing agencies on declassifying and releasing UAP-related historical records.
Current role
ODNI does not conduct its own field investigations but serves as the central intelligence-community coordination and public-reporting point, a role that has made its periodic reports the most closely watched official barometer of the government’s overall UAP posture.
