The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is the U.S. agency that preserves and provides public access to permanent federal records. It is an important source for UFO researchers because it holds most of the government’s historical UFO files.[1]

UAP records

  • Project Blue Book. The Air Force transferred the Project Blue Book case files to the National Archives, which opened them to the public in 1976, with names of witnesses redacted.[1]
  • UAP Records Collection. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024 directed NARA to create a dedicated collection of government UAP records, and agencies have been transferring material to it since 2024.[2]
  • PURSUE. The digitized Tremonton film released by the Department of War in September 2026 came from a 16mm print held by the National Archives.[3]
