NASA commissioned an independent scientific study of UAP in 2022-2023, marking the first time the civilian space agency had taken a formal public role in the subject, distinct from the Department of War’s parallel AARO effort.
The independent study
The 16-member panel, chaired by astrophysicist David Spergel, was tasked with assessing how NASA’s existing scientific and data-collection expertise could improve the rigor of future UAP reporting, rather than re-investigating specific historical cases. Its 2023 report found no evidence UAP have an extraterrestrial origin, while noting the stigma associated with reporting sightings has itself hampered good data collection.
Current role
Following the study, NASA named a director of UAP research and continues to coordinate with AARO on applying remote-sensing and citizen-science data-collection methods to future UAP reporting efforts.
