The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, through its Counterterrorism, Counterintelligence, and Counterproliferation Subcommittee, held the first open congressional hearing on UFOs in over fifty years in May 2022, featuring Pentagon officials discussing the newly formed UAP Task Force’s early findings.
Significance
The hearing was widely covered as a symbolic turning point, ending a long era in which congressional UAP engagement occurred, if at all, almost exclusively in closed session.
Ongoing role
The committee continues to receive classified UAP briefings from AARO and the intelligence community as part of its routine oversight function, generally in closed session, with occasional open hearings on non-sensitive aspects of the subject.
