Beginning around Christmas 1964, residents of the market town of Warminster reported strange booming and crackling sounds followed by sightings of lights and objects in the sky, chronicled extensively by local journalist Arthur Shuttlewood, whose books drew thousands of UFO enthusiasts to the town through the late 1960s.
Assessment
Some individual photographs from the period were later shown to be hoaxes or misidentified conventional aircraft, and skeptics note Shuttlewood’s own financial interest in sustaining public interest. Other reports from independent witnesses were never conclusively explained, and the case remains a staple of British ufology.
