Beginning in early September 1954, French newspapers reported a surge of sightings of disc- and cigar-shaped objects, some accompanied by claims of “landings” and humanoid occupants, across dozens of towns. The wave peaked in October and was covered heavily by the national press.
Assessment
Later statistical analysis by French researchers, including scientists later associated with GEIPAN, attributed a majority of individual reports to misidentified astronomical objects, aircraft, and hoaxes, while classifying a smaller residual set as unexplained given available witness data. The wave is frequently cited in ufology as evidence that mass sighting waves can occur independent of any single triggering hoax.
