Numerous Michigan residents, including police officers, reported glowing lights and low-flying objects over several nights, drawing significant press attention and a personal visit from Project Blue Book consultant J. Allen Hynek.

Assessment

Hynek’s tentative suggestion that some sightings might involve “swamp gas” (marsh gas ignition) was seized upon by the press as the Air Force’s dismissive official explanation, provoking public ridicule and a congressional hearing (attended by then-Congressman Gerald Ford) at which Hynek himself argued for a more rigorous scientific review of UFO reports — a hearing that helped lead directly to the Condon Committee’s creation two years later.
