A young hitchhiker and two responding police officers reported a large, silent object with pulsating red lights that approached low over a field, an encounter detailed in journalist John Fuller’s subsequent book, which helped spur congressional interest in UFO investigation.
Assessment
Project Blue Book’s proposed explanation, involving aircraft from a nearby Air Force base engaged in a refueling exercise, was disputed by the witnesses and by Blue Book’s own scientific consultant J. Allen Hynek, who considered the case one of the more credible unexplained reports of the mid-1960s.
