Betty and Barney Hill reported experiencing roughly two hours of “missing time” while driving home at night after observing a bright object that appeared to follow their car; under later hypnotic regression, both separately described being taken aboard a craft and examined by humanoid beings.
Assessment
The case established the template for the modern “alien abduction” narrative and Betty Hill’s star-map sketch, later compared to real star positions by researcher Marjorie Fish, remains a subject of ongoing dispute among astronomers. Skeptics note that hypnotic regression is now understood by psychologists to be unreliable and prone to confabulation, and that the couple’s accounts diverged in some details; the underlying initial sighting itself remains formally unexplained independent of the hypnosis-derived abduction narrative.
