Kentucky Air National Guard pilot Capt. Thomas Mantell died when his P-51 Mustang crashed after he pursued an unidentified object to a high altitude without oxygen equipment, radioing before his death that the object appeared “metallic and of tremendous size.”
Assessment
The Air Force’s Project Sign initially attributed the sighting to the planet Venus, an explanation widely criticized as implausible; later research established that a classified U.S. Navy Skyhook high-altitude research balloon was likely airborne in the area that day, an explanation most researchers now accept as more consistent with Mantell’s reported observations, though Skyhook’s classification at the time prevented investigators from considering it in 1948.
