A widely circulated broadsheet described a dramatic celestial spectacle over Nuremberg — crosses, spheres, and tube-shaped objects reportedly seen “fighting” in the sky before a large black object fell to earth.

Assessment

Modern researchers, including atmospheric scientists who have reviewed the account, consider the phenomenon most consistent with a complex sun-dog or halo display — an atmospheric optical effect caused by sunlight refracting through ice crystals, which can produce multiple bright “suns,” arcs, and cross-like patterns. The broadsheet’s sensationalized woodcut illustration, produced for public consumption, likely exaggerated the described event.
