The Federal Bureau of Investigation has, at various points since the 1940s, investigated or maintained files related to UFO reports, generally in a supporting or coordinating role to the Air Force rather than as the lead investigative agency.
Role in early cases
An FBI teletype from July 1947, later declassified and often cited by researchers, records that an FBI agent in Dallas was briefed by Army Air Forces personnel that a ‘disc’ recovered near Roswell resembled a ‘high altitude weather balloon,’ a contemporaneous document frequently cited in debates over the Roswell incident.
FOIA disclosures
The FBI has released a body of historical UFO-related records, including files on the Kecksburg incident, through its FOIA reading room (“The Vault”), though these releases have generally documented the Bureau’s peripheral awareness of cases rather than independent investigative findings.
