Historical

Edward Teller (1908–2003) was a Hungarian-born theoretical physicist who worked on the Manhattan Project, led development of the hydrogen bomb, and co-founded Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.[1]

In February 1949 he took part in a conference at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory on the “green fireballs” being reported over New Mexico’s nuclear sites. According to the transcript released in PURSUE Release 04, Teller suggested that if the fireballs were not a “material body,” an “electron phenomenon” in the upper atmosphere might be responsible.[2]

Assessment

The conference reached no consensus. Teller is not otherwise known for UFO interest, and his comment was one of several scientific hypotheses; the leading explanation remains bright meteors.
